- Think in sides: beans, rice, potatoes, vegetables, salad
- Bean and veggie bowls or tacos are reliable defaults
- Add a plant protein (beans, tofu) if one's available
Know the common traps
- Vegetables are often cooked in butter — ask
- Cheese, sour cream, and creamy dressings are easy defaults
- Soups, rice, and beans can contain dairy or animal broth
Ask for easy modifications
- “No cheese / no butter, please” covers a lot
- Request oil or dressing on the side
- Combine sides into one plate when there's no obvious entrée
