Ordering Plant-Based Anywhere

Best bets, things to watch for, and easy modifications for real menus.

~5 min read

Most menus aren't fully plant-based, and that's fine. A few habits let you order with confidence almost anywhere.

Build from what's already there

  • Think in sides: beans, rice, potatoes, vegetables, salad
  • Bean and veggie bowls or tacos are reliable defaults
  • Add a plant protein (beans, tofu) if one's available

Know the common traps

  • Vegetables are often cooked in butter — ask
  • Cheese, sour cream, and creamy dressings are easy defaults
  • Soups, rice, and beans can contain dairy or animal broth

Ask for easy modifications

  • “No cheese / no butter, please” covers a lot
  • Request oil or dressing on the side
  • Combine sides into one plate when there's no obvious entrée
The takeaway

A handful of go-to orders and a couple of polite modifications make eating out easy — no perfect menu required.
